A touchy subject, or not…
When you book with most cruise lines they have a separate “gratuity” charge. This charge ranges from $16.00 to $20.00 and up per person per day on all of the major cruise lines.
As a cruise travel agent when I quote a cruise for my clients, I like to give the price with and without the gratuities included. This way there is no surprises!
The gratuity money goes to your cabin steward staff, dining room servers, and some to the behind-the-scenes staff. The crew gets paid a lower salary and these tips are considered part of their compensation. The crew members all work very hard to give you a wonderful experience. In my opinion, they earn every penny!

Your gratuities can be pre-paid when you book your cruise. Alternatively, you can visit the cruise line website, or ask your travel agent, at anytime to pre-pay them. Many cruisers prefer to do this because it’s done and no need to worry about them later. If you don’t pre-pay, your credit card on file will be charged with your sail and sign card. This charge will usually occur on the second to the last day of your cruise.
This charge is considered optional by many. They will go down to the guest services desk and have the charges removed. I personally have never done this. I budget gratuities in when I plan a cruise. Some say they prefer giving cash tips but you honestly don’t see the many staff members that deserve it.
I understand paying gratuities can be a big expense. However, when you consider the overall total of the price, your cruise offers great value. It’s still a very affordable vacation option.

Now, should you tip extra? That’s up to you. We typically give our cabin steward an extra tip. We also give a dollar or two in the morning for room service. Sometimes a little extra to our server in the dining room. Depending on the service. Totally optional. I always go to the bank and take plenty of $1, $5, $10 for tipping.
Another question I have been asked…
Do they give you better service? Not really. I’ve found we get amazing service, tips or not. I don’t drink but some passengers say the drink servers are more responsive with a little tip.
How you pay, when you pay, and if you pay gratuities is your personal decision.
