Driving to Your Cruise Port: Essential Tips for First-Time Travelers

If you are driving to your cruise port, you will find things are done differently. It’s not quite the same as checking into a hotel.

I am writing this because I once took a phone call from a couple who were arriving at Port Canaveral for their first cruise. They could see the cruise ships but had no idea where they were supposed to go or what to do. They had booked their cruise online and didn’t have a travel agent to guide them. I was finally able to help them but it was a good reminder to me, as a travel agent, to prepare my clients before they leave.

There are thousands of passengers arriving within just a few hours to board the ship. There are also thousands getting off of the ship to head home. It can be pretty hectic and confusing for first time cruisers. Even experienced cruisers can get frustrated. Every port is different and so I strongly recommend that you do your research before you leave.

First things, first!

When you get to the cruise port follow the signs for luggage drop off. You drive through and drop off your suitcases to the porters. They then put them in big delivery carts. They take them to the ship. Your suitcases are delivered to your cabin sometime in the afternoon.  We typically tip the porters $1 to $2 per bag.

You will have luggage tags to print after you do your online check in. Attach these to all of your checked bags so they know what cabin you are in. I also put a business card or extra tag inside my suitcases. This is in case the outside tag gets ripped off or lost. It has never happened to me but it can. If you lose a tag before you drop off your luggage the porters have generic spares. You will need your cabin number when filling them out. This is also time consuming and creates a delay.

After you drop off your suitcases, you can then go park. Depending on the port, you can catch a shuttle or walk back to the terminal. Then you get in line to check in. It’s strongly advised that you don’t arrive before your designated check in time. This helps with the traffic congestion.

PARKING OPTIONS

Every cruise port has different options for parking. I do a google search for each port and also check on the cruise line website. You can also get advice from your travel agent or cruise groups on the best parking options.

Your options can include onsite terminal parking, which is usually more expensive but very convenient.

Many cruisers will spend the night at a nearby hotel if it has a parking option. Most will provide a shuttle to the port. I highly recommend this option because you are close to the port on your cruise day. This ensures that you won’t be late and miss your cruise due to traffic or accidents. Google park and stay options at the cruise port you are sailing from.

At most ports you will a lot of cruise parking lots near the port. If you reserve a spot in a parking lot that’s farther away from the terminal, they usually provide a shuttle. The shuttle service may be provided to take you to and from the port. I always make reservations ahead of time for our parking. Parking costs vary but is typically around $20 to $25 per day.

Prepare ahead of time and bring your patience for a good cruise arrival and check in experience.
