When you book a cruise you will hear the term “luggage tags” mentioned quite often. I didn’t give them much thought at first but quickly learned they are very important!

Imagine a gathering of 4,000 to 6,000 people. Now imagine at least that many suitcases that must be distributed throughout thousands of cabins within a few hours! Cruise lines do not put a restriction on how many bags you can check in for your cruise. However, they strongly suggest no more than two per person. They also suggest that each suitcase should not exceed 50 pounds, but they don’t weigh them.

Once you complete your online check in for your cruise you will be issued a luggage tags. This tag will have your name (or a place to print your name) on it. It also states your cabin or stateroom number. Some will indicate the deck with a color code. If you have priority boarding, it will also indicate this. Your luggage should be placed in your cabin sooner than others.
Once you have your tags issued, you’ll be able to print them. It is not a requirement for them to be printed in color.
You must attach these tags to each piece of luggage, bag, or backpack. Give them to the porter when you arrive at the port. I like to attach one to my carry on bag or backpack. I use it throughout the cruise just in case I leave it somewhere! (Not saying I’ve ever done it😂).
You can print as many as you need and follow instructions to fold and staple the tags to your suitcases. If you do this you should cover them with packing tape so they don’t fall off. I prefer to use plastic, reusable luggage tag holders like these on Amazon. They last forever! If the wire ring breaks I just use a zip tie. As a travel agent, I think these are an essential item for cruising. It is always part of my thank you gift to my clients.

I always print extras. I put them in my suitcases just in case it gets ripped off the bag during handling.
