Cruising is popular because you visit a variety of ports. Seeing the world, one port at a time! When you get to your port you will want to consider taking a shore excursion.
Shore excursions are activities that cruisers can do while their cruise ship is docked in a port. They offer a way to explore the destination and experience its culture, history, and natural beauty. Excursions can range from guided tours to more active adventures. This an easy, safe way to explore your destination.

When we first started cruising, I liked excursions that included a tour of the island. I also liked an option that included a beach break or activity. This gave us a chance to get a real feel for the port.
When cruising to a new port I do a lot of research before booking anything! I start with the cruise line website and my website which is partnered with Shore Excursions Group. I find excursions that look interesting to me and my traveling companions. I also do an internet search, ask for opinions in social media groups, and read reviews.

In all of our cruises I have only booked two excursions with the cruise line. This was because there were no other options to do what I wanted. The others have been booked with third-party or outside companies.
Third-party shore excursions often offer advantages such as lower prices. They also feature smaller group sizes and more flexible itineraries when compared to cruise line excursions. They can also provide a more personalized experience and allow you to explore off the beaten path.
Reasons to Consider Third-Party Excursions:
- Cost Savings:Third-party excursions can be significantly cheaper than those offered by the cruise line, sometimes by 20-40%.
- Smaller Groups:Many third-party operators offer tours with smaller groups, leading to a more personalized and less crowded experience.
- Flexibility and Customization:You can often customize the tour to your preferences and choose a more adventurous or in-depth experience.
- Local Expertise:Third-party tour operators often have local knowledge and connections, providing insights into the area’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
- Independent Exploration:Third-party excursions can allow you to explore on your own, without the pressure of a structured tour.
- Support Local Businesses:Choosing a third-party excursion supports the local economy.
- Guarantee Your Spot:Booking ahead with a third party guarantees your spot on the excursion, whereas cruise line excursions can sometimes be sold out.
Potential Disadvantages of Third-Party Excursions:
- Risk of Missing the Ship:It’s crucial to ensure the third-party excursion guarantees you’ll be back on time, as cruise lines may not wait for you if you miss their all-aboard time.
- Transportation Challenges:Some third-party operators may not have access to the port area or may not provide transportation, requiring you to find your own way to and from the excursion.
- Limited Options:Cruise line excursions may offer more options, particularly for destinations where third-party operators are not as established.
- Potential for Hidden Costs:Be sure to check for any hidden fees or extra charges when booking with a third-party operator.

I always book with reputable outside tour companies. Check reviews on sites like Trip Advisor. These companies make their living from excursions and they do everything they can to provide a wonderful experience.
One excursion we took with both the cruise line and an outside vendor was from Cozumel to the Tulum ruins. The difference was like night and day. The guide was not near as personable or as informative with the cruise line excursion. The crowd was huge and we were “herded” around constantly. With the independent excursion we paid much less for a much better tour experience.

I have never talked to anyone who was late getting back to the ship. Nor do I know anyone who has been left behind because of a tour. I know it has happened. However, Shore Excursions has sold almost 5 million tours. No one has ever missed the ship.
Always check their policies and guarantees before purchasing your excursion.

A good example is this guarantee offered by Shore Excursions Group:
“Guaranteed Return to Ship”
“In the extremely unlikely event that you miss your ship due to the late arrival of one of our tours, we will arrange and pay for your accommodations, meals, and transportation to the next port of call, and we will pay you an additional $1,000 USD per customer for the inconvenience.”

There are times when I don’t book a prepaid excursion, especially if we have visited the port several times. We often get off the ship and see what tours are offered by independent tour operators at the port. They will be standing around with signs offering private or bus tours. You can try to negotiate for a lower price. We did a glass-bottom boat tour in Cabo for $10 per person!
This pic is of a river float in Jamaica that we booked through Shore Excursions Group. My daughter said it was the best day of her life!

Going on a shore excursion while cruising offers a unique opportunity. You can immerse yourself in the local culture, history, and natural beauty of a destination. Excursions provide structured activities that can range from guided tours to active adventures, ensuring safety and ease of exploration. Look into your options for cost-saving opportunities. Consider smaller group sizes. Seek customization and local expertise. These allow travelers to experience destinations more intimately.
As a cruise travel agent I enjoy consulting with my clients and giving them suggestions and ideas for booking the right excursions.
