Cruise Services for the Deaf: Sign Language Access

Don’t hesitate to cruise if you have a hearing disability!

On a cruise to Alaska I noticed a sign language interpreter signing during the seminars we attended. I saw him with the same gentleman at the shows and in the dining room. I had the opportunity to speak with him. I assumed he was a friend or relative.

I found out that he was a paid interpreter. This service was provided at no charge by the cruise line to the passengers!

Cruise lines often provide sign language interpreting services for deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers. These services are typically provided at no extra cost and can be requested in advance. Many cruise lines work with companies like Scootaround and Propio to provide qualified interpreters.

Summary:
  • Services Provided:Interpreters are available for events like main production shows, port presentations, and other major activities on board.
  • Requesting Services:Passengers can request interpreting services by contacting the cruise line directly or through their travel agent.
  • No Additional Cost:Interpreting services are usually provided at no cost to the passenger.
  • Advance Notice:Some cruise lines recommend providing advance notice, such as 60 days, to ensure adequate arrangements.
  • Contractors:Many cruise lines contract with companies like Scootaround to provide interpreters.
  • Specific Cruise Lines:Several cruise lines, including Carnival, Princess, Disney, Royal Caribbean, and Celebrity, are known to provide sign language interpreting services.
  • Shared Basis:Interpreters may be shared among multiple deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers on a cruise.

Cruising is a wonderful way to enjoy and explore the world if you have a hearing disability. As a travel agent I can arrange these services for my clients. The request must be submitted as quickly as possible. Most cruise lines specify at least 60 days before sailing. Notify your travel agent or the cruise line if you need these services. Do so as soon as you book your cruise.
