Why Do Cruise Ships Use Tender Boats?

In cruising, a water shuttle or tender refers to a smaller boat. It transports passengers between a cruise ship and the shore. This happens when the ship cannot dock directly at the port.

This is often necessary in ports with shallow water. It is required when there is limited port infrastructure. It also happens when the ship is too large to dock directly.

What is tendering?
  • Tendering:The process of using smaller boats to ferry passengers from a cruise ship to shore is called tendering.
  • Why Tendering is Needed: Cruise ships may not dock at certain ports due to water depth. Limited infrastructure, such as piers, can also be a reason. The size of the ship may prevent docking as well.
  • How Tendering Works: The cruise ship will anchor in deeper water. Passengers will then board the tender boat. They will be transported to the shore.
  • Water Shuttle as a Tender:The term “water shuttle” is often used interchangeably with “tender.” This describes the small boat used for this purpose.
  • Benefits of Tendering: Tendering allows cruise ships to access a wider variety of destinations. This access might not be possible if direct docking were required.
There is no charge to use the water shuttle from the ship into port or back again.

Typically they allow passengers who have booked a cruise line excursion to board the shuttles before other guests. Some cruise lines issue special tickets for these guests. Listen for the announcements and check your daily newsletter or app for instructions for boarding.

We often go to the dining room for breakfast. We wait for the rush to be over. Then we make our way down to the gangway to catch a tender.

There are clear instructions and signs when you arrive on the pier. They display the final shuttle times to return to the ship. Each cruise line usually have their own pier for loading and unloading.

If you are a guest with a mobile disability and require assistance, notify guest services. They will direct you to the right shuttle boat. Some boats cannot accommodate wheelchairs and scooters.

I personally enjoy having to take a water shuttle into port. Our grandkids love it too! We often visit with other cruise guests during the short ride.

Word of warning, hold onto your hats as it gets pretty windy at times!

Most cruise lines have a section on their websites with a list of ports that require a tender.
