My favorite thing to do while cruising is to go to a beautiful beach. I don’t want to lounge around. I want to swim! Swimming in warm tropical waters is a highlight of cruising for me!
Cruisers often worry about keeping their beach bags safe. This is especially true when they plan to enjoy a fun day at the beach. They just want to swim and hang out in the water.
My main tip is to use a bag that zips closed.
We use a backpack instead of a beach tote. It’s much more secure and easier to carry.

Secure your bag to your lounge chair while you are in the water. Make it difficult for a thief to just grab and go. Use a small chain with a combination lock. A long Velcro strap is another option. You could even use a big zip tie. Remember to pack some nail clippers to cut it off.
Then throw a towel or shirt over your bag so it isn’t so visible.
We spend hours in the water. We have never had our bags disturbed. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Keeping your beach bags safe while swimming can be tricky, especially if you’re alone or in an unfamiliar area.
Here are several practical tips to reduce the risk of theft and keep your belongings secure:

1. Bring Only Essentials
- Leave valuables on the ship whenever possible.
- Bring only what you truly need. Pack a towel, sunscreen, and water. Don’t forget the ship sail and sign card. Also, take your ID or a copy of it, and a bit of cash in small bills. Tuck some cash in a pocket in your swim trunks.
2. Use Waterproof Bags & Take Items with You
- Invest in a waterproof pouch or dry bag you can wear while swimming. These can hold your phone, money, and keys securely around your neck or waist.
- There are even floatable waterproof bags you can tether to yourself.
3. Hide Valuables Smartly
- Disguise containers: Use a cleaned-out sunscreen bottle or snack bag to stash small valuables.
- Bury your bag under your towel, but avoid obvious signs like mounds or bulges.
- Split valuables between multiple hidden spots in your gear.
4. Secure Your Spot
- Choose a beach with lockers or security (many busy beaches offer this service).
- Sit near a lifeguard station or other families—thieves are less likely to act in crowded, visible areas.
- Lay your towel and gear close to where you’re swimming, so you can keep an eye on it.
5. Use Anti-Theft Gear
- Bring a lockable beach bag or portable safe that you can secure to a chair or umbrella.
- Use bags with slash-proof straps and RFID protection for added security.
6. Use Tech Wisely
- Track your belongings with small GPS trackers (like an Apple AirTag or Tile) hidden inside your bag.
- Download apps that can lock or erase your phone remotely in case it’s stolen.
