Wait…… what? How?

If you take a “closed-loop” cruise from the US you don’t need a passport! You will need your birth certificate and a photo identification such as a drivers license. But, no passport!

Okay, but what is a closed-loop cruise?

A closed-loop cruise refers to a cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port.

It’s a legal and logistical term with implications for passport requirements and immigration rules.

⚠️ Important Warnings:

  • If you need to fly home from a foreign port due to an emergency, you’ll need a passport.
  • Some countries (e.g., Barbados or Martinique) may still require a passport regardless of U.S. rules. If your ship visits these ports you can still cruise but must stay onboard.
  • This closed-loop rule only applies to cruises that start and end in the same U.S. port.

Always check with your travel agent. Review the cruise line policies before confirming your reservation if you don’t have a passport.
