Top Free (or Almost Free) Beaches in Cozumel for Cruise Visitors

Cozumel is one of the most visited islands for cruise ship itineraries! You don’t need a planned excursion on this island. There are plenty of taxis that will take you to and from the beaches.

You won’t get left behind if you watch the clock. Allow yourself plenty of time to return to the ship. We usually allow at least two hours before the ship departs to return.

Cozumel beaches are known for their crystal-clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, vibrant coral reefs, and excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities.

Best “Almost” Free Beaches in Cozumel for Cruise Passengers

Playa Palancar

 Best True Free Beach

  • Cost: $20 entry (just pay for what you eat or drink)
  • Vibe: Relaxed, local feel with soft sand and shaded seating
  • Amenities: Restaurant, bar, loungers (free with food/drink), restrooms, snorkeling tours available
  • Distance from port: 25 minutes by taxi ($20 each way)
  • Why go: Beautiful beach, laid-back, no pressure to spend

Tip: Arrive early to get a chair without needing to rent. Bring cash for tips and food.

Dzul-Ha (Money Bar Beach Club)

Best Free Beach for Snorkeling

  • Cost: Free access (restaurant/bar on site, pay only if you eat/drink)
  • Vibe: Rocky shoreline but excellent snorkeling right off the beach
  • Amenities: Snorkel gear rental, showers, food/drink service
  • Distance from port: 10–15 minutes by taxi ($10–$15)
  • Why go: One of the best free snorkeling spots near cruise ships

Tip: Bring water shoes — the entry is rocky but worth it.

Playa Corona

Low-Key and Local

  • Cost: Free beach access (pay for food/drinks if you want)
  • Vibe: Small beach area, chill atmosphere
  • Amenities: Snorkeling access, bar, rental gear
  • Distance from port: ~10–15 minutes from cruise piers
  • Why go: Less crowded than Mr. Sancho’s or Paradise Beach; good snorkeling

Tip: Great spot if you’re looking for a peaceful beach close to the ship.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

( Entry Fee but Worth Mentioning)

  • Cost: ~$19 USD entrance fee (not free, but very low-cost for what you get)
  • Includes: Beach access, lighthouse, crocodile lagoon, hammocks, nature trails
  • Distance from port: ~40–45 min (farther, but gorgeous)
  • Why go: Best natural beach scenery in Cozumel; fewer crowds

Pro Tips for Free Beaches

  • Bring your own towel and snorkel gear if you don’t want to rent.
  • Cash is king — especially for food, taxis, and tips.
  • Leave early if your ship departs mid-afternoon.
  • Check your ship’s pier — some beaches are closer to Puerta Maya & International Pier than Punta Langosta (in town).
