Best Dining Times for Cruise Passengers

When you’re new to cruising deciding on your dining time is important. I like to explain the differences to my clients if it’s their first cruise. In the past there were basically only two times, early or late. Now most cruise lines have added a flexible dining time.

The early or late seating times are called “traditional” dining. You may be seated with other cruise passengers, strangers. It is part of the “cruise experience.” Most of the time we enjoyed meeting new friends. However, it was awkward for us on a few occasions! Now, they have smaller tables and seldom seat you with others. You can also request to be seated either by yourself or with others.

If you are cruising with family or friends, ensure your cruise reservations are “linked.” This way you will be seated together at the early or late dining times. If you chose anytime dining, you check in together as a group.

The best dining time on a cruise ship depends on your preferences and schedule. Early dining, typically around 5:30-6:30 PM, is good for families with children. It’s also beneficial for those who like to catch evening shows. Additionally, it suits those who prefer to have their evenings free. Late dining, usually around 8:00-8:30 PM, attracts those who enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere. It is also favored by those seeking late-night entertainment and those who prefer to dine after a cocktail or show.

Main Dining Room – MDR

Traditional seating times – you will be seated at the same table each night with the same servers. You are expected to arrive on time. If you are later than 10 minutes they may ask you to go to the buffet for your dinner.

Early Dining (5:30-6:30 PM):

  • Pros:
    • Good for families with children who have earlier bedtimes.
    • Allows time for evening shows and other activities after dinner.
    • May be better if you prefer an earlier bedtime.
    • May be more popular, so it’s worth booking early.
  • Cons:
    • Can feel rushed, especially if you have a busy day in port.
    • You might miss some pre-dinner activities or shows.

Late Dining (7:45-8:30 PM):

  • Pros:
    • More relaxed atmosphere, as the crew isn’t preparing for a second seating.
    • Allows time for pre-dinner drinks, shows, or other activities.
    • Good for those who prefer a later dinner time or who enjoy nightlife.
  • Cons:
    • Can feel too late for some, especially if you’re tired from a day in port.
    • You might miss some early evening entertainment.
    • Might make you feel rushed to get ready for dinner after a long day.

Other options:

  • My Time Dining/Open Seating: Allows you to dine at your preferred time, subject to availability. There may be some wait times after you check in.
  • Flexible Dining: Some cruise lines offer flexible dining options, allowing you to choose your dining time each night.
  • Buffets: Buffets are available throughout the day, offering a more casual and flexible dining experience.

Factors to consider:

  • Your daily schedule:Think about what activities you plan to do each day and how that might affect your dining preferences.
  • Your energy levels:Consider whether you prefer to eat earlier and have a longer evening or dine later and relax after dinner.
  • Your social preferences:If you enjoy dining with the same people each night, set dining times might be a good choice. If you prefer flexibility and meeting new people, My Time Dining might be better.
  • Cruise line’s dining options:Some cruise lines offer more flexible dining options than others.

Casual Dining Options

These venues offer more flexible hours:

  • Buffet:
    • Breakfast: ~7:00–10:30 AM
    • Lunch: ~12:00–2:30 PM
    • Dinner: ~6:00–9:00 PM
    • Late-night snacks: Sometimes available until midnight or later
  • Poolside Grills / Pizzerias / Deli Counters:
Often open late, some even 24/7 (especially on Carnival and MSC)

Breakfast & Lunch in the MDR

  • Breakfast: ~7:30–9:00 AM (varies by port/sea day)
  • Lunch: ~12:00–1:30 PM (typically only on sea days)

Specialty Restaurants

  • Usually open for dinner only, around 5:30–9:30 PM
  • Some also open for lunch on sea days or by reservation

Ultimately, the best dining time is the one that best suits your individual needs and preferences. It’s a good idea to research the dining options available on your specific cruise line. Also, consider your own schedule and preferences when making your decision.

My family has a few cruising rules! Do what you want during the day but meet for dinner each night! It’s when we have a chance to relax, talk about our experiences, and bond with each other! We also encourage everyone to try something different. My grandkids have eaten frog legs, escargot, and alligator! And, if there’s dancing and singing, join in!

Once on your cruise, your dining time typically cannot be changed and you cannot jump back and forth ie. go from traditional dining to anytime dining the next night. If changing your dining time is necessary, visit the dining room. Speak to the host or maitre de.

Here’s a group just for new cruisers and others! No judgment with correct answers to your questions. Lots of in-depth information, tips and personal advice!
