Carnival Cruise MDR Attire: Casual to Elegant Styles

Packing your clothes for dinner in the Main Dining Room – MDR – should not worry you much. Going to the MDR is included in your cruise fare and is part of the great cruise experience! I often get asked, “Do I have to dress up?” I know many clients aren’t into “fancy” and this worries them.

Most cruise lines have really relaxed on their dress codes. When we first started cruising they expected the guests to wear dressy casual even on regular nights. Meaning slacks and button shirts for men and dresses or skirts for women! Not anymore! Especially with Carnival.

In the Main Dining Room (MDR) on Carnival Cruise Line, dress codes are pretty relaxed overall. There are two main types of evenings: Cruise Casual and Cruise Elegant.

Be aware that you will see guests dressed in whatever is comfortable for them. You will see t-shirts, baseball caps, shorts, low-cut gowns, etc. It might not be to your liking but I can tell you, it doesn’t make your food taste any different!

Here’s what to expect:

Cruise Casual (Most Nights)

You’ll see this most nights in the MDR.

Acceptable attire:

  • Men: Polo shirts, dress shorts, jeans, khakis, or slacks.
  • Women: Sundresses, blouses with capris, jeans, casual skirts, or dress shorts.
  • Kids: Same rules as adults—casual but neat.

Tips:

  • Clean jeans are fine (no rips/tears).
  • T-shirts are okay if they’re neat (avoid offensive graphics).
  • Closed-toe shoes or dress sandals are recommended.

Avoid:

  • Beachwear
  • Tank tops (for men)
  • Flip-flops
  • Bathing suits or cover-ups

Cruise Elegant (Usually 1–2 nights per cruise)

Carnival has one elegant night on cruises 5 nights or less, and two on cruises 6 nights or longer.

Suggested attire:

  • Men: Dress slacks and a collared shirt (tie/jacket optional but encouraged).
  • Women: Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, skirts with nice tops, or elegant jumpsuits.
  • Kids: Dress clothes or smart casual wear.

You can go full formal if you want — many do (think suits, evening gowns), but it’s not required.

Footwear Note

Honestly, wear what is comfortable. There can be long walks to the dining room or long waits to be seated. No barefeet!

Enjoy your MDR experience by being you! Don’t stress!
