I often book a cruise to celebrate something special in my life. Birthday, anniversary, and other occasions. It’s my favorite way to celebrate!
I can’t wait to board the ship to celebrate my special occasion. I look around and what the heck? Why didn’t they roll out the red carpet for me? Where’s the banners and balloons? I’m special, right?

Why didn’t they do something amazing and special for me?
Many cruise clients also ask what the cruise line will do for their special event or celebration. It’s a valid question when they are booking their cruise.
The honest answer: cruise lines cater to thousands of guests per sailing. Many of these guests are celebrating something—birthdays, honeymoons, graduations, anniversaries, retirements, or first cruises.
There are so many special occasions happening at once. They can’t realistically give every celebration the “full VIP” treatment. Doing so would require charging extra and would probably overwhelm their crew.
Here’s why it might feel like they’re not doing enough:
No automatic celebration unless you speak up!
Just noting your birthday on the booking often isn’t enough. You usually have to tell Guest Services or your dining room staff personally. Let your travel agent know too!
They keep it simple unless you buy extras!
Most free birthday perks are minimal—maybe a small cake and a song at dinner. Anything beyond that (like cabin decor or cakes) is considered “premium” and comes with a price. You must order these ahead of time.
It’s not personalized unless you ask!
If you’re expecting a surprise gift, greeting, or card, that’s rare unless someone you know arranges something in advance.
You might get a gift card from the spa. However, it comes with a lot of conditions. It usually ends up costing you a lot extra in the end.
Cruise lines prioritize consistency over customization. Their focus is delivering a smooth, predictable experience for thousands—not deeply personalizing for each guest.

What You Can Do to Make It Special
- Tell Guest Services early (they may add a small treat or send a card).
- Talk to your dining team—they usually love doing a little song & dessert.
- Order a birthday package in advance or through the Fun Shops.
- Bring your own small decorations (door magnets, room banner, etc.).

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on a cruise. Our family had planned a big family outing on another date. So, we decided to go on a cruise by ourselves. At the time we had traditional dining time so our servers got to know us quite well. Our anniversary was on the sixth night of the sailing. Our main waiter came out with a little cake and sang a beautiful love song to us! It was a moment to remember.
