I have been wrestling with this subject for quite awhile. I’m a pretty dedicated Carnival cruiser. Additionally, I shop at Walmart.

Should I be ashamed? No!
Why? Because I appreciate getting value for my hard-earned money.
We’ve cruised with other cruise lines but we really enjoy cruising on Carnival.
I don’t drink or gamble.
I don’t like to stay up all night.
I don’t care for loud music either.
I like to dress casual but I don’t wear t-shirts or cut offs!

And, I’m a senior…
So, how can I like Carnival?
I’m a travel agent. How can I recommend Carnival?
There are a lot of misconceptions and myths about cruising with Carnival.
Let’s check them out!
Myth: “Carnival is the Walmart of cruises—it’s cheap and low quality.”
Reality: Carnival is the Fun Ship brand, designed to make cruising affordable and accessible without sacrificing the experience.

When you step onto a Carnival cruise ship, you’ll first see the ship’s atrium. It is often a grand, multi-level space that serves as a central gathering point. Next, you’ll encounter diverse dining venues like specialty steakhouses and casual eateries. There are also numerous bars and pubs for socializing and drinks.
Various activity areas depend on the specific ship. You’ll find different decks and areas like The Serenity Deck, SportSquare, Grand Central, WaterWorks, Kids Zone, Havana, Ocean Plaza, etc.

Their ships offer live music and comedy shows.
You can enjoy water parks and specialty dining.
They also have unique venues you won’t find anywhere else.

NOTE: Guests get more square footage space in standard cabins compared to some lines.

They even have nice ocean view cabins for families! These deluxe cabins can fit up to five guests and they have an extra bathroom!
They offer award-winning kids’ programs, and plenty of adult-only spaces too.
Some ships offer the private Havana resort-like experience. Guests in the Havana area who are 12 years and older have exclusive access to the Havana pool, hot tubs, and bar. These guests also enjoy cabins with a Cuban-like flair.

Myth: “It’s just a party cruise.”
Reality: Sure, Carnival knows how to have fun—but they also offer quiet retreats.
They provide elegant dining and Broadway-style productions.
There are even exclusive destinations like Relax Away at Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key.
Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or nightlife, Carnival has a space for your vacation style.

Myth: “Low price means low service.”
Reality: Carnival’s crew is consistently praised for their warmth, friendliness, and personal touches.
Many guests sail Carnival over and over because of the outstanding service and welcoming atmosphere.

To me it’s heartwarming to walk out of my cabin and hear a cheerful greeting, “Good morning, Miss Jeannette! Have a great day.”
The truth?
If you’re expecting an upscale luxury experience, reconsider choosing this cruise line. Especially if you desire nightly turn down services and a quiet, refined atmosphere. If you enjoy dressing up every night for dinner and appreciate exquisite cuisine served with multiple place settings and tablecloths, or expect waiters to promptly brush off the crumbs as soon as they hit the table you will want a different cruise option. Carnival is not for you.
But….on the other hand…

Carnival offers great service and there’s so much that’s “included!”
Food, entertainment, activities to be enjoyed by all ages.
I recommend a longer cruise vacation for a better experience. Short cruises, under 5 days tend to have a more party atmosphere on all of the mass cruise lines.
As an experienced Carnival cruiser I certainly have my preferences. I’ve cruised on most of their ships, some as many as 5 times! For me, the bigger and newer, the better.
Carnival provides good food and spacious cabins. There is tons of fun at a price point that makes cruising accessible to more people.
Basically, Carnival delivers a big vacation value—fun for families, couples, and groups—without breaking the budget. That’s why so many guests become loyal Carnival cruisers.
I guess that’s why I “bristle” when I see derogatory comments about Carnival on social media. I don’t feel like it’s a reputation that’s totally deserved.
