Insider Tips for a Perfect Day in Cozumel

Since we’ve frequented many Caribbean cruise ports of call quite a few times, I’d be more than happy to share some insider tips! If your itinerary includes Cozumel, I have put together a few recommendations to help you navigate a wonderful port day.

Getting Around & Shopping

• The Exit Gauntlet: When you disembark, you’ll have to walk through a maze of shops to reach the taxi stands.

My Pro Tip: Save your shopping for the walk back to the ship. You won’t have to carry bags all day, and vendors are much more likely to haggle on prices as the day winds down.

• Taxi Logistics: Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. Rates are usually better if you have a larger group (the “more the merrier” rule applies here!). Don’t worry about getting stranded; when you’re ready to leave a resort, there are always drivers lined up and waiting.

Activities We’ve Tried

• Island Tours: Honestly, there isn’t a ton to see from a van window. I’d skip the formal “tour unless it’s your first time. You can usually ask your taxi driver for a quick tour for a little extra money.

• Tulum Ruins: This involves taking a ferry to the mainland. The ruins are spectacular and the beach time there is great, but keep in mind it is a very long, exhausting day.

• All-Inclusive Beach Resorts: We’ve tested several, and Paradise Beach is the gold standard. It usually runs about $75 per person.

My Top Recommendation for a fun, easy and relaxing day on Cozumel:

The “Beach Break Cozumel” Getaway

Since I don’t drink much and we aren’t big eaters, the “all-inclusive” price tag usually isn’t worth it for us. Instead, we found a much better value at the San Francisco Beach Club. They have a variety of packages starting at $20. They have packages that include round-trip transportation from the cruise piers, or an all-inclusive package. Book ahead for the best value.

The $20 Basic Package:

For just $20 per person, you get the essentials:

• Beach lounger and umbrella

• One included drink

• Use of the pool and kayaks

• Access to the water park (trampolines, mats, etc.)

Add-ons (A La Carte):

You can pay as you go for food or extras like jet skis, parasailing, and massages. My daughter loved the beach massages—they are significantly cheaper than the spa prices on the ship! If the vendors approach you for something you don’t want, a simple “no thanks” is all it takes.
