Let’s talk about some myths you might have heard about cruising. Some of these are common misconceptions that often hold people back from ever trying the wonderful world of being on a cruise ship.

1. “Cruises are too expensive”
Reality: Cruises often bundle accommodations, meals, entertainment, and transportation into one price—making them a strong value compared to land vacations.
We recently went on a trip to LasVegas with friends for a few days. Afterwards I totaled the cost and we could have booked a balcony cabin on a 7 night cruise with wonderful food and entertainment for much less money.

2. “I’ll get seasick the whole time”
Reality: Modern ships are large and stabilized, and most itineraries (especially Caribbean) have calm waters. Mid-ship cabins + proven remedies = minimal issues for most travelers.
When you’re on a cruise ship you will hardly even realize you’re at sea! But, I always advise clients to take a few remedies just in case.
⸻
3. “Cruises are only for older people”
Reality: Cruise lines cater to all ages:
- Families (waterparks, kids clubs)
- Couples (adults-only retreats)
- Groups & solo travelers
We often cruise with multi-generations and there’s always something for everyone. Some cruise lines really cater to families and provide a lot of activities of all ages. All of the popular cruise lines have free children’s clubs onboard.
⸻
4. “I’ll be bored”
Reality: Ships are packed with activities:
- Live shows, comedy, casinos
- Fitness classes, spas, excursions
Many clients say they didn’t have enough time to do everything. I often feel that way!
⸻
5. “Cruises are crowded”
Reality: Ships are designed to spread guests across multiple decks and venues.
Choosing the right ship and itinerary makes a big difference. I think it’s very important to do the research to find a cruise ship that will suit each guest. That’s why I recommend certain cruise lines for more mature guests or ships with fun activity areas for families.
⸻
6. “Food is mediocre buffet food”
Reality: Cruises offer:
- Main dining rooms with multi-course meals
- Specialty restaurants
- 24/7 options
Some ships feature chef-driven dining experiences. There is so many different food venues and variety offered, that’s it’s often hard to make a choice! World famous burgers to elit, world class chefs are featured.
⸻
7. “I’m stuck on the ship”
Reality: Port days let guests explore multiple destinations without repacking.
This is actually one of cruising’s biggest advantages. Imagine, waking up at a different port or island every morning. What an amazing, convenient way to see the world!
⸻
8. “I need a passport for every cruise”
Reality: Many closed-loop cruises from the U.S. (like Caribbean sailings) allow travel with just a birth certificate + ID (though passports are recommended).
Many first time cruisers aren’t sure they want the expense of purchasing passports. This is where I can answer your questions about documentation that’s needed. Especially for non-US citizens or visa situations.
⸻
9. “Cruises nickel-and-dime you”
Reality: While extras exist (drinks, excursions, specialty dining), many packages and promotions include perks.
You need to “know before you go” and book the right fare type to avoid surprises.
⸻
10. “Planning a cruise is simple—I can just book online”
Reality: Booking a cruise is different than reserving a hotel room. Online websites aren’t there to answer your questions or give advice on the things you need to know!
- Travel document requirements
- Best cabins & locations
- Promotions, group perks, onboard credits
- Advice on travel, excursions, specialty packages, parking
- Cancellations penalties, name changes, insurance
